The Andy Dewing scholarship will award two $1000 scholarships in February of each year.
Established in 2023, the Andrew J. Dewing Memorial Scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to new members of Washington and Lee Greek organizations, easing the financial burdens associated with joining. The scholarship’s namesake, Andy Dewing ’84 P19 P23 was an impassioned advocate for Washington and Lee University, his Greek organization and Greek life as a whole.
Andy, an ardent proponent of education, held a fervent belief that the pursuit of knowledge should be within reach for all who aspired to it. His hope for a W&L Greek scholarship was rooted in the noble vision that no member of the Washington and Lee community should ever find their interests or aspirations compromised due to limited resources. Andy cherished the enduring bonds he forged through fraternity life and sought to perpetuate that sense of camaraderie and shared values.
After Andrew’s passing in April of 2023, Washington and Lee’s Alumni Greek Council instituted this endowed scholarship in his honor. Any student who has just accepted a bid to a nationally affiliated Greek organization with AGC representation will be eligible.
“Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.”
